Moab Engagement Sessions: An Adventurous, Candid & Meaningful Photo Experience

You found your adventure partner for life - let’s celebrate!

You’ve already done the hard part - finding the love of your life. Now it’s time to celebrate, soak in the excitement, and, of course, capture this incredible moment in a way that feels totally you! Whether you are dreaming of an adventurous sunset session on a rugged Moab trail or a cozy, intimate moment in the red rock desert, an engagement session is the perfect way to document your love in its most joyful, unscripted form.

So, wondering what it’s like to have an engagement session in Moab? Let’s dive in!

Choosing the Right Adventure: Hike-In or Drive-Up?

Every couple is different, which is why I offer two styles of engagement sessions: hike-in or drive-up. The right choice depends on your vision, energy level, and how immersive you want the experience to be.

The Hike-In Experience

A couple hikes in a sandstone bowl during their Moab engagement photo session.

For couples who love the journey as much as the destination, the hike-in session is a dream come true. Hiking together creates a sense of adventure and intimacy that is hard to match. Along the way, I will capture moments of connection - holding hands on the trail, stopping to take in the sweeping desert views, sharing a quiet moment before the sun sets. When we reach the final overlook, it will feel like you have the whole world to yourselves. This session is about more than just photos; it is about the experience of exploring together, breathing in the wild desert air, and celebrating your love in a place that feels like magic. This option requires about three hours and is ideal for couples who want an intimate, adventurous experience in a truly secluded location.

This option is best for couples who:

  • Have time to commit to an evening hike.

  • Want a guided hike and a photo session combined into one experience.

  • Want to explore a more remote, private location.

  • Are up for a little adventure and movement in their session.

The Drive-Up Experience

A couple looks into each other's eyes longingly during their engagement photo session in Moab.

Not every couple wants to hike (or has time to)! Some couples choose a drive-up session simply for the location itself. Moab has plenty of breathtaking spots that require little to no hiking, making it easy to get incredible photos without the trek.

For example, the Windows Area in Arches National Park offers dramatic rock formations just steps from the parking area, while Dead Horse Point State Park provides panoramic canyon views with minimal walking.

If you love the idea of a stunning location with easy access, the drive-up experience is perfect. This option allows us to focus fully on capturing connection, movement, and laughter in an epic setting without worrying about the physical effort of a hike.

This option is best for couples who:

  • Want a specific location that is drive-up accessible.

  • Prefer a shorter session but still want incredible scenery.

Both options lead to breathtaking images, and the key is choosing the experience that feels right for you.

What to Wear for Your Moab Engagement Photos

Your outfit choices should reflect you and how you want to feel during your session. Think about the overall vibe you want - adventurous, elegant, casual, or a mix of everything! Moab’s dramatic desert landscape provides the perfect backdrop, and the key is to wear something that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and free to move.

First and foremost, wear something that feels like you. If you never wear dresses, don’t force yourself into one just for photos. If you love wearing bold colors, do not feel pressured to stick with neutrals. The best engagement photos happen when you feel like your most natural self.

That being said, there are a few things to consider when choosing your outfit.

Moab’s terrain is rugged, and there will be plenty of movement during your session. Wear something that allows you to walk, sit, twirl, and explore without restriction. Long, flowing dresses or skirts can look stunning in the wind, while well-fitted, comfortable layers can add depth and texture to your images.

Shoes are one of the most important factors. Even if you love heels, consider something more practical for the hiking portions of your session. Boots, flats, or sandals with good grip will help you navigate the terrain safely and comfortably. And when we reach our final location, you might just want to kick off your shoes and dance barefoot on the sandstone! There is something magical about feeling the warm rock beneath your feet as the sun sets around you.

When it comes to colors, earth tones and neutrals tend to complement the desert best. Deep greens, purples, burnt oranges, rust, cream, and blues all photograph beautifully against Moab’s red rock landscape. If you love prints, opt for subtle patterns that do not overpower the scene. Bold accessories like hats, scarves, or statement jewelry can add personality without being distracting.

If you are still unsure, try on your outfits, snap a selfie, and send it my way for feedback! The goal is to create a cohesive vibe that allows you to shine and truly represent your style in the Moab desert.

Best Time of Year for Moab Engagement Photos

Choosing when to have an engagement photoshoot in Moab totally depends on what vibe you’re going for. Each of Moab’s seasons sets the stage for a different type of experience, so keep the following thoughts in mind:

Spring offers mild temperatures, making it one of the best times for an engagement session. The weather is comfortable, and the desert feels alive with color.

Summer can be intense, with temperatures reaching over 100 degrees, but sunrise and sunset sessions can provide a cooler and more comfortable experience.

Fall is another perfect season, with crisp air, golden sunsets, and cooler weather that makes hiking more enjoyable.

Winter is Moab’s slowest season, offering peace and solitude among the red rock formations. The cooler temperatures create a dramatic and unique setting, especially if a light dusting of snow appears on the sandstone. If you are considering a winter engagement session, be sure to dress in warm layers and be prepared for temperature drops in the evening.

That being said! Moab’s desert climate can be unpredictable, with sudden temperature shifts, especially in winter, spring, and fall. It’s always a good idea to bring layers that complement your outfit so you can stay comfortable without compromising your style.

Why I Love Photographing Engagement Sessions

For me, photography is not just about snapping pretty pictures - it’s about creating a playful space where couples can connect, be fully present with each other, and celebrate their love in an unforgettable setting.

An engagement session is more than a photo shoot. It is a moment in time where you pause, breathe it all in, and really feel what it means to be in love and stepping into this next chapter together. And when that moment happens in Moab, it’s pure magic.

Every couple brings something unique to their session, and that is what makes it so special. Let’s find out how to bring your Moab engagement vision to life.
